Grenney’s Fundraising Tips

Christine Grenney’s RWE Fundraising Success Tips and Examples

Christine is the 2019 RWE Co-chair and fundraiser extraordinaire.  She and her teammates of The Average Joe’s have raised thousands of dollars for Park City Schools in the last few years.  Christine considers her RWE fundraising efforts an investment in the educational future of her 2 young daughters and our community.

Christine did the following:

  • Personalized her fundraising page with copy and photographs.
  • Determined who she asked in previous years and asked again.
  • Sent personal, customized and heartfelt emails.
  • Included a link to her FR page in the body of the email.
  • Explained how RWE supports Park City Schools and her children in particular.

Below, she shares the secrets of her success.

Secrets to Success

  • Be loud or be quiet but have a plan and a goal.
  • Write the check yourself and be done or call on 5 close friends or family members and ask them for help. Aim for 5 this year and 7 next year.
  • Track who gave, how much and when. Simply re-create those emails of calls the following year.
  • Go door-to-door and ask your neighbors. Ask your workplace to donate and ask them to raise the matching gift they gave last year. Challenge your friends and competing teams to beat you.
  • For me; it’s a family event. Mike (husband) runs and is not comfortable asking for support. The girls benefit and will be in PCSD for years to come. The investment is for them. I don’t run but I fundraise. Ask kindly, directly, in your own voice and articulate why you are asking. But do not be afraid to ask.
  • My immediate and most generous response was from writing personal emails to 30+ potential donors on a Friday afternoon. It took me maybe an hour to do and over $3000 will be raised as a result of individual gifts and matching.
  • The event is fun and adoptable by all ages but the goal is to fundraise so make that the primary element of your competition – running and costumes are secondary and are the fun reward for your efforts to raise money.
  • I edited our Profile to add a family photo, edit the language on why to give, changed our name to represent our family and added a monetary goal.

With a plan created and executed, Christine’s team raised over $2,000 (so far!) All it took was 60 minutes and 3 days of donors activating. Christine challenges anyone involved to make the time and create your own personal call to action and just.do.it.

Examples of personal emails Christine sent to different donor types.

  1. to co-worker who gave last year:

Suzy Jo,

You very generously donated $125 to my Running with Ed team last year. Sotheby’s agents raised $1000 last year to support my goal to raise $2000 (Sotheby’s Cares agreed to match up to $1000). This year, Sotheby’s Cares has agreed to match agent-generated gifts up to $1500. That’s $3000 to support many of the programs that would otherwise go un-funded like arts, coding and after-school programing.

I am aware that your charitable contributions are many. As a friend and peer whom I respect, I would love it if you would consider making Running with Ed and my team even a small part of your 2019 philanthropy.

You can make any contribution you deem appropriate here (be sure to choose Mike Grenney of the Average Joe’s team) and know, in advance, that I am grateful. I am also happy to collect a check if that is easier.

Thank you.

Lila and Anika thank you (grades 6 and 3 in Fall 2019)

Mike thanks you.

With respect and love,

Christine

  1. to a neighbor/friend:

Jane and John,

I am taking part in Running with Ed this year! I am also the Event Co-Chair for the 10th Anniversary of Running with Ed. It’s an honor to have been asked to serve and a responsibility that I take seriously.
